When Canadians Apply for Loans

Borrowing has a rhythm, and it is not the one branch hours assume. Every application to Smarter Loans carries a timestamp, which makes it possible to see when Canadians actually decide to apply for a personal loan: which day of the week, and which month of the year. This report covers the year to July 2026, drawn from more than 79,000 applications.

Across Smarter Loans personal loan applications from August 2025 to July 2026, Tuesday busiest at 18.3% of applications, Sunday quietest at 12.4%. Tuesday leads by a clear margin and every other day sits close to the average. The likeliest reason is timing: problems surface over the weekend and on Monday, and people apply the next day.

The more useful finding is at the other end of the week. Saturday and Sunday together account for about one in four applications. A quarter of the people who decide to borrow do so when no bank branch is open, which is a large part of why online lending exists and why its decisions run around the clock.

By month the pattern is much stronger. Across the same Smarter Loans personal loan applications from August 2025 to July 2026, May busiest at 12.4% of the year, September quietest at 6.2%.

  • May: 12.4 percent of the year’s applications. The peak.
  • September: 6.2 percent. The trough, half the May rate.
  • March to July: about half the year’s applications.
  • September to February: roughly two fifths.

Two things stand out. The September trough sits exactly where back-to-school spending is supposed to peak, which suggests households borrow ahead of that spike, in the summer, rather than during it. And the quiet stretch from September through February covers the holidays, which are often assumed to drive borrowing and in this data do not.

What this means if you are borrowing

Timing does not change what you qualify for, but it changes how fast the money moves. Online lenders decide at any hour, and funding runs on bank transfer windows, so an application submitted early in the week usually funds sooner than one submitted Friday night. If the need is not urgent, the quieter months are no worse a time to apply; lenders do not price by season. Our guides to how to find the best loan rates and online lenders versus banks cover what does move the price, and the personal loans page compares lenders on it.

Frequently asked questions

What day of the week do most people apply for loans?

Tuesday, at 18.3 percent of Smarter Loans personal loan applications in the year to July 2026. Sunday was the quietest at 12.4 percent, and the remaining days sat close to the average.

What month do Canadians borrow the most?

May, at 12.4 percent of the year's Smarter Loans personal loan applications in the year to July 2026. September was the quietest month at 6.2 percent, half the May rate.

Do people apply for loans on weekends?

Yes, about a quarter of applications arrive on Saturday and Sunday. Online lenders decide at any hour; funding typically lands the next business day because bank transfers run on business hours.

Does the time of year affect loan approval or rates?

No. Lenders do not price by season, and approval rests on income, credit and existing debt. Timing affects how quickly funding arrives, not what you are offered.
