What instant approval actually means
No lender approves anyone instantly in the sense the marketing implies. What happens is automated underwriting: software reads your application, your stated income and often your bank activity, and returns a decision in minutes. It is a real improvement in speed. It is not a lower bar, and any lender advertising approval with no checks at all is describing a product you should walk away from.
The useful distinction is between decision speed and funding speed. Plenty of personal loans decide in minutes and fund the same day or the next morning. A payday storefront hands over cash on the spot. That gap of hours is what the price difference below is buying.
What lenders still check
Every licensed lender verifies income and an active bank account. Instant-decision lenders often connect to your bank digitally to read deposits directly, which is faster than pay stubs and harder to overstate. Some check credit, some do not; the ones that do not price for the risk instead. Nothing about a fast decision removes the underwriting, it just moves it into software.
What the speed costs
Instant products cluster at two price points. If the product is a payday loan, $1,500 or less due within 62 days, the cost is capped at $14 per $100 borrowed, set federally since January 1, 2025:
| Province | Maximum cost |
|---|---|
| Ontario | $14 per $100 |
| British Columbia | $14 per $100 |
| Alberta | $14 per $100 |
| Saskatchewan | $14 per $100 |
| Manitoba | $14 per $100 |
| New Brunswick | $14 per $100 |
| Nova Scotia | $14 per $100 |
| Prince Edward Island | $14 per $100 |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | $14 per $100 |
| Quebec | payday lending effectively prohibited |
What that costs in practice: borrow $300 for 14 days at the $14 cap and the fee is $42. Annualised, that is roughly 365%, which is why a payday loan only makes sense when the alternative is genuinely more expensive.
Cheaper routes usually exist, even with weak credit. Start with the payday loan alternatives before you commit.

A fast instalment loan charges interest instead, capped at 35 percent APR. Price both on $500 over three months: about $70 in payday fees, against roughly $29 in interest even at that legal maximum, and you get three months to repay instead of two weeks. Speed is worth paying something for. It is rarely worth that much.
The honest pros
- A decision in minutes, without a branch visit or an appointment
- Funding the same day or next day from many online lenders
- Digital income verification, which suits people whose pay is regular but paperwork is thin
- Fixed payments on instalment versions, so the cost is known on day one
The honest cons
- Faster decisions price in less patience for nuance, so borderline files that a human might approve get declined or priced up
- The fastest products are the most expensive ones, and the marketing rarely says which product you are looking at
- Short repayment windows on payday versions collide with the same tight budget that made the loan urgent
- Easy borrowing invites repeat borrowing, and repeat payday borrowing is the most expensive habit in consumer credit
How to protect yourself
Before you accept any instant offer, find three things in the agreement itself: which product it legally is, the total dollar cost to the end of the term, and the lender's licence in your province. Every provincial regulator publishes its licence list. If a lender makes any of the three hard to find, walk away. To compare the total cost against a slower option, the personal loan calculator prices any amount, rate and term in seconds.
| Lender | Amount | Rate | Speed | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bree Loans | $15 to $750 | 0% interest, fees may apply | within 24 hours | See if you qualify |
| Cash Money | $500 to $10,000 | 34.99% APR | within 24 hours | See if you qualify |
| LendDirect | $100 to $15,000 | 34.99% APR | within 24 hours | See if you qualify |
| MDG Financial | $3,200 to $20,000 | 19.8 to 34.99% APR | within 24 hours | See if you qualify |
| Loan Away | $1,000 to $5,000 | 19.9 to 34.5% APR | within 24 hours | See if you qualify |
One application here returns decisions from multiple instalment lenders, most within minutes.
